How the AI search vocabulary moved in a year
Three terms compete to name the same worry: that buyers are asking an AI assistant instead of a search engine. We tracked all three in US search volume across a year. AI SEO is the largest, generative engine optimization peaked early and fell back, and answer engine optimization climbed from almost nothing to a real number. Our own data, fetched 14 September 2026.

Method
Source. Ubersuggest, US locale, English. Monthly search volume. Fetched. 14 September 2026. Terms. AI SEO, AI marketing, generative engine optimization, answer engine optimization, and their close variants. Limit. Ubersuggest hit its daily cap of 150 keyword reports during the run. Eight planned keywords returned HTTP 403 and are recorded as no data rather than as zero.
Search volume estimates are modelled, not measured. Treat the relative sizes and the direction of travel as the signal, and the absolute numbers as approximate.
The standing position
| Term | US monthly volume | Difficulty | CPC |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI SEO | 8,100 | 54 | $41.79 |
| AI marketing | 5,400 | 61 | $32.29 |
| Generative engine optimization | 4,400 | 74 | $28.56 |
| AI marketing tools | 4,400 | 47 | $34.55 |
| Answer engine optimization | 2,400 | 56 | $32.53 |
| Generative engine optimization (GEO) | 1,600 | 69 | $29.66 |
Six phrasings, one question. The market has not settled on a name, which is why the same page has to answer to several of them.

The cost per click is the number that tells you this is a real market rather than a conversation. AI SEO at nearly $42 a click is expensive, and nobody bids that for a term buyers are not using.
The movement, which matters more than the level
Two trajectories in opposite directions.
Answer engine optimization climbed hardest. It went from 210 searches a month in August 2025 to 1,600 in June 2026 and 2,400 in July 2026. That is the steepest climb in the whole dataset, from a term almost nobody was using to one with real volume in under a year.
Generative engine optimization peaked and fell back. It reached 6,600 in August and September 2025 and has sat between 3,600 and 5,400 since.
The steepest climb in the dataset, against a term that peaked a year earlier. Both describe the same job.

So the term with the research paper behind it peaked early, and the term with no literature at all is the one still growing. That is a useful corrective to the assumption that vocabulary follows evidence. It mostly follows whoever is publishing.
A note on one number we threw out
“Marketing fundamentals” returned a headline volume of 301,000, which would have made it one of the largest terms in the study.
The monthly series makes it unusable: 1,500,000 in July 2025, 1,830,000 in August 2025, 90,500 in September, 4,400 in October, then between 210 and 590 a month from November 2025 to June 2026, then 301,000 in July 2026.
A term does not behave like that. It is a data artefact, the steady-state months put it in the thin band, and we excluded it. We mention it because this is exactly the kind of number that ends up in a slide as evidence of enormous demand.
What to take from it
- The vocabulary has not settled, so do not build a brand on one of these terms as though it were permanent.
- AI SEO is the term with the most demand and the highest commercial intent. If you are writing to be found, it is the one that pays.
- AEO is the growth term. If the climb continues, the position is cheaper to take now than later.
- Always look at the monthly series, never the headline figure. One of the six terms we checked was an artefact.
If you run the company rather than the marketing
The decision this bears on is whether to name something in your business after one of these terms.
The honest read: the vocabulary is a year old, one of the three terms has already peaked and declined, and the one growing fastest has no research behind it. Any service line, page or job title built on one of them is a bet on which word survives.
That is an argument for describing what you do in durable language and using the current vocabulary only where buyers search for it. Name the service for the outcome. Use the term of the month in the page title where the demand is.
The second thing worth your attention is the cost per click. Over $30 a click across all of these means you are entering an auction against venture-funded software companies. Paid search is not where a services business wins this, and anyone proposing it should be made to show the maths.
